József Karai: Der Gondelfahrer (TTBB, piano)

József Karai’s Der Gondelfahrer is a setting of Johann Mayrhofer’s German poem for TTBB male choir and piano. Inspired by the imagery of moonlight, stars and a gondola drifting across the water, the music creates a mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere. Flowing vocal lines and a gently rocking piano accompaniment contrast with more intense passages, bringing out the poem’s shift between peaceful night scenes and deeper reflections on human worries.

A distinctive addition to a male choir’s concert repertoire, especially for programmes exploring romantic poetry and atmospheric choral music.
