Battista Pradal: Vexilla Regis (SATB, Orchestra)
Battista Pradal: Vexilla Regis (SATB, Orchestra)
A powerful sacred choral setting of Vexilla Regis by Giacomo Puccini, presented here in a new arrangement and orchestration by Battista Pradal for mixed choir (SATB) and string orchestra, based on Puccini’s original version for tenor, bass and organ.
The arrangement preserves the solemn character of the Latin hymn while expanding the original texture into a richer choral and string setting. The music moves between maestoso, dramatic passages and quieter, expressive sections, with the strings closely supporting and enhancing the vocal writing. The contrast between full choral statements and more intimate passages gives the work a strong architectural shape and concert presence.
The Latin text is by Venantius Fortunatus (530–607) and centres on the Cross and the Passion of Christ. The arrangement is particularly suitable for sacred concerts, church performances, Holy Week programmes and choirs working with a string ensemble.
