Warren Lee: As Small as a Mustard Seed (SA, piano)

As Small as a Mustard Seed by Warren Lee is a sacred work for children’s choir (SA) with piano, inspired by texts from Matthew 17:20 and Proverbs 16:20. Written for the young children’s choir of St. Paul’s Co-educational College in Hong Kong, the piece explores faith, doubt and the belief that even the smallest amount of faith can overcome great obstacles.

The music follows the imagery of the text closely: a dark, chromatic piano opening represents the “mountains” to be overcome, while the choir enters with a contrasting, brighter character. A more reflective middle section portrays moments of doubt before the music returns to a brighter, more confident sound and builds towards a triumphant conclusion.

A meaningful and expressive choice for children’s choirs, particularly for concerts and sacred or ceremonial programmes.
