Ivan Yohan: Gloria (SATB)
Ivan Yohan: Gloria (SATB)
Ivan Yohan’s Gloria brings the traditional liturgical text into a striking Indonesian musical context, combining Western choral writing with the atmosphere and musical gestures of West Papua. Written for mixed choir (SATB), the work is part of Yohan’s Indonesian Mass, a project conceived to explore the meeting point between European composition and Indonesian musical culture.
The piece moves from energetic, tightly coordinated choral writing into increasingly unconventional passages. Particularly distinctive is the “yelling” section, where singers freely create vocal patterns inspired by the sounds and freedom of the jungle, while soloists continue to proclaim the sacred text. The score also incorporates vocal gestures imitating the traditional nose-flute, as well as mouth percussion and foot stomping, giving the closing section a strongly physical and rhythmic character.
A bold and unconventional choice for mixed choirs looking to explore sacred repertoire beyond traditional European styles, while engaging directly with the sound world and performance practices of Indonesian culture.
