Nancy Telfer’s Requiem aeternam is an atmospheric and dramatic work for female choir (SSAA), piano and percussion, inspired by the sea, nature and the idea of eternal renewal. Rather than following a traditional Requiem text alone, Telfer combines Latin liturgical elements with original English poetry, moving from the quiet imagery of sand and waves through the urgency of Dies Irae to the lively Sanctus and Hosanna and the reflective Agnus Dei. The piano and percussion play an important role throughout, adding sounds and rhythms that evoke waves, birds and whales. A substantial concert work for ambitious women’s choirs, with plenty of contrast and strong opportunities for expressive performance.
