Colin Mawby’s O Emmanuel is a spirited Advent motet for TTBB male choir, setting the Latin antiphon associated with December 23. Driving rhythms and repeated phrases build a sense of joyful anticipation, while the opening bare fifths evoke the music’s medieval roots. The work culminates in a powerful expression of hope and the plea for salvation: “Veni ad salvandum nos” — “Come and save us.”
An engaging choice for male choirs looking for energetic Advent repertoire with a strong, resonant sound.
