Alberto Balzanelli’s O crux ave, spes unica is a dramatic a cappella motet for mixed choir, drawing on Gregorian chant and the Latin liturgical text. The music contrasts a powerful, ceremonial opening with more intimate passages inspired by birdsong from the Argentine Pampas. Rich vocal textures, shifting rhythmic patterns, spoken-style passages and changes in meter create a wide expressive range, from contemplative prayer to a brilliant, triumphant conclusion. A demanding choice for experienced choirs seeking a substantial sacred work for concert or liturgical performance.
